Introduction
Who Tried is a stealth security application designed for Android devices. It monitors unlock attempts and captures photographic evidence of unauthorized access using the front-facing camera.
System Requirements
- Android 8.0 (Oreo) or higher.
- Front-facing camera.
- Minimum 20MB free storage space.
Permissions Guide
Camera Permission
Required to take photos of the intruder. The app only uses the camera during a failed unlock event and never captures video or audio.
Storage Permission
Required to save the captured photos in a secure, hidden folder on your device's internal storage.
Device Administrator
Who Tried requires BIND_DEVICE_ADMIN permission to monitor the lock screen. This is the only way for the app to know when an incorrect password or pattern has been entered.
Note: To uninstall the app, you must first disable the "Device Admin" permission in the app settings or the Android system security settings.
Data Security
All data processed by Who Tried is 100% Local. We do not use cloud storage, and your photos never leave your device unless you explicitly share them.
Battery Announcer & Background Services
The Battery Announcer feature provides voice alerts for battery states (full, low, charger connected/disconnected). To ensure reliable announcements even when the app is closed, this feature runs as a Foreground Service.
When activated, you will see a persistent notification in your status bar. This is required by Android to ensure the system does not kill the service while you are relying on it.
Theft Alarm & Custom Sounds
The Theft Alarm can be triggered by unauthorized access or movement. You can customize the alarm sound by navigating to Settings > Sound Settings. From here, you can select from our custom-built harsh sirens or choose a system ringtone. Custom audio assets are securely bundled within the app.
App Disguise (Stealth Mode)
To prevent intruders from discovering and deleting the app, Who Tried includes an Icon Disguise feature. By enabling this, the app's launcher icon and name will change to resemble a generic application, such as a Calculator or Clock.
Android 14+ Compatibility
Who Tried has been heavily optimized for modern Android architectures (Android 14, 15, and 16). Modern Android restricts apps from launching activities from the background. Who Tried circumvents this restriction legitimately by utilizing FOREGROUND_SERVICE_SPECIAL_USE APIs alongside a secure trampoline architecture, ensuring the camera and alarm can reliably trigger from a locked screen without crashing.
